How it started

It started with a sensor.
Running made it personal.

STRIV began with advanced tactile sensing. But it became a company when the technology met a problem our founder had lived with for years.

From teaching machines to feel

Founder Axl Chen holds degrees in computer science from Columbia and design & technology from Parsons, driven by one question: how can machines understand the physical world? Built in the Cambridge/MIT ecosystem, STRIV's thin, flexible textile-based tactile sensors went on to support research at MIT CSAIL and other leading labs.

The problem became personal

A distance runner since high school, Axl was repeatedly sidelined by shin pain and ankle injuries. So he put the sensors into his own shoes, looking beyond pace and heart rate to understand how his body was actually moving.

Listening to runners

Conversations with runners, coaches, and physical therapists — including Olympic marathoner Jake Riley — revealed a broader problem: athletes had more training data than ever, but little visibility into how their bodies were actually moving.

Built in the real world

We shipped the first version of STRIV to nearly 2,000 runners who tested it in their own training. Every run, conversation, and iteration taught us what athletes actually needed — not just what looked good in a lab.

Dr. Adam Tenforde, MD

Dr. Adam Tenforde, MD

Scientific Advisor · Director of Running Medicine, Spaulding National Running Center

Dr. Adam Tenforde, MD, is a board-certified sports medicine physician and Director of Running Medicine at the Spaulding National Running Center, and Associate Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School. His clinical and research work focuses on running-related injuries, bone stress injuries, injury prevention, and athlete health.

As a Scientific Advisor to STRIV in his individual capacity, Dr. Tenforde advises the team on biomechanical metrics, research design, validation methods, and how movement insights are communicated to runners. He completed his residency and sports medicine fellowship at Stanford University Medical Center.

Kate O'Neill Tenforde

Kate O'Neill Tenforde

Athlete Advisor · 2004 U.S. Olympian, 10,000m

Kate O'Neill Tenforde is a 2004 U.S. Olympian and one of the most accomplished distance runners of her generation. She competed for Yale University, where she was a seven-time All-American, ten-time Ivy League Champion, and was named the 2003 NCAA Woman of the Year for Connecticut.

In 2004, Kate qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team in the 10,000 meters after running 31:34 and finishing third at the U.S. Olympic Trials. She later transitioned to the marathon, placing third at the 2007 Chicago Marathon.

Drawing on her experience as an elite athlete and years of coaching runners of all levels, Kate advises STRIV on athlete experience, training insights, and translating movement data into practical guidance that helps runners optimize performance, training and recovery.
